Some Call it Hyper!

Reflections on my own spiritual journey, with theological exposition, reviews and Bible commentary.

  1. To Reach His Own

Death, Burial, Resurrection, Intercession: The One Plan of God to Reach His Own.
I have been contemplating a thesis that suggests that God designed the gospel to save His people from their sins (Matt. 1:21), and sent Christ to die for them alone (John 10:11; Acts 20:28; Eph. 5:25-27), and their salvation is guaranteed by the work of Christ (Rom. 8:32; 2 Peter 1:3,4). The problem emerges when it is also asserted that it is God’s will to have the gospel preached to every person (without ...

  2. Dogmatic

    Dogmatic.

I am often asked, “How can you be so dogmatic about your views, when great minds have been divided over issues for so long?”

Part of my response to that question is to ask, “Do you, the questioner, not hold some things dogmatically?” “Is there really any doctrine that has not been divided?” “Does this mean we cannot be dogmatic about anything?”

Well, let me address this question as best I can.

    I am dogmatic about ...

  3. Self-advancement or Self-abasement?

    Self-advancement or Self-abasement?

“Man's religion is to build up the creature. God's religion is to
throw the creature down in the dust of self-abasement, and to
    glorify Christ.”

    J.C. Philpot

If Philpot is right, and I am fully inclined to take him so, then this shows the key to discerning whether our Christian churches are promoting “true ...

  4. All About Him

“Glorious Justice: Its All About Him.”

I was reading in Ezekiel a few months ago, and I recall being struck by something rather startling. There was a clear declaration that God was going to judge and punish sinners. Usually, one links the judgment or punishment of God with the just desserts of sinners. It fits with the cultural notion that, “what goes around comes around.” Yet in this text there is a very different idea, indeed. The ultimate goal of God’s judgment is His glory. ...

  5. Some Call it Calvinism

    “Some call it Calvinism”

Is it compromise or is it something else? Why is it that so many Calvinists disparage other Calvinists with the epithet of hyper-Calvinism?

Much of what passes for discussion on these issues is really nothing more than misunderstandings of the Bible. How my heart aches as I hear Calvinists give up ground to Arminians in their exposition of such texts: John 3:16; 1 Timothy 2:4; and 2 Peter 3:9, for example. Many Calvinists surrender these ...

  6. Sugary Sweets

Much of what passes for church teaching today would could be compared to syrup instead of steak.

While the sheep sit hungry, many themselves unaware of their inner pangs, the peddlers blast forth their stories and anecdotes providing nothing more than sugary sweets that do nothing but rot the teeth and damage the health of those listening.

The days are long gone when ministers were Pastor-Theologians whose prime responsibility was to study God's Word. Indeed, as an observer ...
