I've always believed it is authoritative because it is the Word of God and have believed it does not truly conflict with Paul. That's what I've always believed. I understand you don't think its canonical. This is troubling to me on the face of it.

Definition of Faith

The gift of God whereby one looks to Christ as he is set forth in the gospel in truth.

The Spirit graciously gives assurance to those who assent to the truth. Good works have no part in producing assurance in an individual.
