I say, the non-elect,--"whosoever was not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire." (Rev. 20:15) "The goats," or non-elect, are to be "on the left hand" at the winding up or dreadful day of final judgment. (Matt. 25:33) This we must believe, and that "the sheep," or elect, will all be at "the right hand." Not one will be missing on either hand. Thus all God's works shall then finally praise him; for "He hath made all things," yea, even "the vessels of wrath," "the tares," "goats," non-elect, as well as the saints, or elect, "for himself; yea, even the wicked for the day of evil." (Prov. 16:4) And if a sparrow does not fall on the earth by chance, never-dying souls surely do not fall into hell by chance. And the "eternal" God, "with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning," made "the tares" to be burnt, as the event will show; "Gather the tares in bundles to burn!" (Matt. 13:30) Dread thought! Happy art thou, reader, if thou art brought to "fear;" for right "spiritual" fear is the beginning of all saving wisdom. (John Kay)
We have the new doctrine of Regeneration by faith, singing theology, sudden conversions, the enquiry room, sensational advertisements, such as - February for Jesus, Liverpool for Jesus, body and soul for Jesus, etc. And when these new appliances have completed the task allotted them, we have an exhibition of the work done! (J. K. Popham)
The text declares, that "he is able to save them to the uttermost." But has He not already saved them? Do we not read, "Who hath saved us, and called us with a holy calling?" Salvation is a past act. The elect were saved in the purposes of God, when their names were written in the Book of Life; and they were saved actually, when the Saviour died on the tree. But they are saved in their consciences, when there is a manifestation of salvation of their souls. And this all the people of God have experienced, or are longing to experience; and not a single soul thus longing will go out of the world before he has received a manifestation of this salvation in a greater or less degree.(J. C. Philpot)
If there must be our act of believing before there be participating in Christ, then mark what will follow, those sins which were once laid upon Christ, and taken away from the elect; for they could not be laid upon him, unless they were taken from them; are, it seems, returned back again upon these believers; whereas they were charged upon Christ; he once paid the full price; upon the payment of this, there was acknowledged full satisfaction, so that those sins were once blotted out: I say, if there must be believing before there be union with, or interest in Christ, it must necessarily follow, that, till such believing, the person of that elect bears his own transgressions, is chargeable for them that are imputed unto him. But how can it stand with the glory of the redemption of Christ, that he should have all iniquity laid upon him, carrying all iniquity, like the scape-goat, into the land of forgetfulness, whither they were once carried, and they are afresh charged upon this person. Did Christ bear them away? and did he return them back again? (Tobias Crisp)
6. All labour bestowed on the goats, sir, will add nothing to the household of faith. It is best of all to seek the lost sheep of the house of Israel: these shall most surely believe; not by enforcing the duty of all men upon them, but the power of Christ in them. "As soon as they hear of me, they shall obey me." "Thy people shall be willing in the day of my power." It is the sheep, sir, that must come for your hire in the great day; therefore seek these: the goats are the price of the field, but Christ is the price of the sheep. Do as you are bid; feed the sheep, feed the lambs; the goats will never believe the gospel, though they may believe your doctrine. "Ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you." You shall as soon change their complexion by animal magnetism, as change their hearts with your doctrine. (William Huntington)
