Bondage of the Will by Luther

Hello!! I was wondering if anyone would be interested in doing like a book club/ reading group with me? I recently purchased Bondage of the Will by Luther, and a few other books. Well I'd really like it if anyone would want to read through this book together and hold each other accountable on dates to finish a chapter? I have read parts of introduction and all of chapter one but I can go back and reread again. For me with just so much going on in my life with student teaching and all sometimes its hard to set time aside. But I really want to, and when I have a buddy to read along with it is very helpful.
Maybe for those who have already read it they can reread it? Or just join in discussion.
Thats another thing can we after reading through a chapter discuss it on the forum? Maybe under this Title.

Maybe I am just weird but I think this would be so cool. I am a teacher so I see the benefits of reading groups for younger kids think it'd be awesome for me as well... and plus its reading about God and not teacher stuff. So let me know what you think and maybe we can set a date for when to have the first chapter read by? Thank you!!

    Mary

Mary, I just looked thru my library, I dont have another copy of Bondage of the Will left, I probably gave my last copy away and didnt realise it.
I think the book club is an excellent idea though, I will order another copy, but I will catch up with you on another book perhaps

Re: Bondage of the Will by Luther

Ditch the Garbage! - Too many people are proud of their humility - I, on the other hand, am not humble - and am proud of it!

"Luther's New Testament was so much multiplied and spread by printers that even tailors and shoemakers, yea, even women and ignorant persons who had accepted this new Lutheran gospel, and could read a little German, studied it with the greatest avidity as the fountain of all truth. Some committed it to memory, and carried it about in their bosom. In a few months such people deemed themselves so learned that they were not ashamed to dispute about faith and the gospel not only with Catholic laymen, but even with priests and monks and doctors of divinity." - A complaint by German humanist Johann Cochlaeus.

Yes I read it years ago, before I was converted, but God used it in giving me more understanding of our native depravity, it was a pleasure to read...

Did you all decide how you are going about this reading and discussion? I have been reading the Bondage for a bit now and am still in the introduction, ready to start chapter 1. I had to put it aside for several weeks due to some other things going on and so picked it up again.

    Is it a go?

Re: Bondage of the Will by Luther

Well my thought in it.. is can read through the introduction yet its not a whole lot besides historical background but it still has some stuff in it. Maybe say to glance through the introduction and read Chapter 1. And set a date that works for everyone that isn't too hard to meet yet challenges people to keep reading. So maybe say what in three weeks? I dont know.. need to know how busy people are. Then when we've all glanced through the intro and read Ch 1. we can discuss the book, what questions we had and all.
Would you want to discuss on the forum by posts or by like a chat room? I dont know.. any thoughts? I'm thinking forum.. maybe..

Thanks for all the feedback its awesome that people want to do this! Really encouraging to me.

Thats just a summary of the pages right? Or is that just the introduction? 'Cause there isn't enough pages words there to be the whole book that I can find that is...

Re: Bondage of the Will by Luther

Do you guys want to have read chapter 1 by May 1st? I'm still itching to read this with people.. more so ask questions and point out things that I have read in Ch 1. I've had Ch.1 read for awhile now.. but just really want to talk through it with someone. Any thoughts? or are people too busy? Or should I just post my questions and thoughts anyways?

    Thanks,
    Mary

I'm game, I just wonder if we all have the same book and if chapter one is the same in each. Tell me, won't you, the title of your book and the title of chapter one that you are wanting to start with. My chapter one is the intro of Luther's "to the venerable master Erasmus of Rotterdam, Martin Luther wishes Grace and Peace in Christ".

I can be ready by May 1 along with you and Lori.

Re: Bondage of the Will by Luther

I think it would be best to get through chapter 2 (the first ACTUAL chapter--which would be chapter 1 in today's books) before extensive discussion. Luther's dogma on the necessity of affirming definite ASSERTIONS (PROPOSITIONS) lays the foundation for the whole remainder of his work, so until we have read that portion I don't think there is enough material to stimulate the type of interaction that would be beneficial. It seems that we should be able to get through that much material by next weekend (Apr. 23) if we are serious students!
Now see here how sleepy-headed all our opponents are, and how little it helps a man to rely on the ancient fathers, for all their repute down the course of the ages! Were they not all equally blind to, yes, and heeldess of, Paul's clearest and and plainest words?

    --Martin Luther

Sounds good to me! Thanks Bob for joiining in, my guess is you have already read that book so it'll be cool to seriously discuss things with you and others. I'll go back and reread some sections that I have read in Ch1,2 this weekend. Maybe get a head start on the other chapter. Thanks! Cant wait! Oh I'd also just suggest skimming the introduction I found it helpful to skim it.. its just historical background though.

    Have a great day!
