It's always easier initially to pass the buck but the results can be devastating. The Biblical mandate is not for the government to educate the childre, but the parents. Just as the Biblical mandate is not for the government to provide for the poor, but the families, and if they can't, then the church. People push all their problems on the government, and then when they do a lousy job they think the government needs more funding.

For whatever strength of arm he may have who swims in the open sea, yet in time he is carried away and sunk, mastered by the greatness of its waves. Need then there is that we be in the ship, that is, that we be carried in the wood, that we may be able to cross this sea. Now this Wood in which our weakness is carried is the Cross of the Lord, by which we are signed, and delivered from the dangerous tempests of this world.--St. Augustine

    oh boy..

This just gets me going sometimes.....Just ask the doc.
My favorite is how public school teachers stink and are trying to push "humanist" ideas. I really get tired of hearing how bad the schools/teachers are. I am a public school teacher. I have been for many years. I have found that almost 100% of teachers I have ever taught with care about kids, try to educate them, and generally do their jobs well. Now, 2 of the 3 schools I have taught in have also been "top" schools in the nation. So, I am sure their are "bad" teachers. In fact, in my first teaching position, I took over for a man that only "taught" every other day. The rest of the time the kids just sat and talked. So, of course a few of the kids loved that I came in and did my job, but most hated me. I can tell you from experience that (just an estimation) that 80% of what is"bad" in public schools are the influence of the kids on other kids, parents that don't demand that the kids be respectful, and an administration that won't discipline(perhaps because they answer to parents that don't like it). Teacher's hands are tied. We are not always allowed to discipline them in a correct manner. Gone are the days(in many schools) where you can "just send a kid to the office" In fact, once(even though it was the most effective thing I could have done) I had two very extreme cases removed after class to the office. The principal supported me somewhat but didn't like it that I sent them down there-blah blah. I very rarely write an office referral, but trust me this was an extreme case. How can people blame teachers when the teachers are not allowed to teach? The problem my friends is not teachers, or the "humanist" ideas, but the the parents/children, lack of respect, and a lack of discipline. Also, just because a child goes to a christian school, does not mean that they are getting a better education. I think parents have a choice. Wherever people decide to send their children is their business. In fact, I am sure this is not the norm, but I have heard of teachers that cannot get a job in the public system because of child abuse allegations or lack of qualifications that are in private schools. So, just take it from a christian teacher, if you must place blame, I would encourage you to look at other aspects before you blame the "bad teachers" I am also blessed with some great kids that could be nothing but the best influence on other children. Of course, I have others that would not.
    Thank you

    Dear Angie,

It's not often I get to converse with you publicly! After years of "lurking" I'm glad you posted your first post!

Honey, I don't think most people who "home school", and have no desire to send their kids to public school have anything against public school teachers. I think most homeschooling Christian parents would think it's a good thing that there would be more Christian teachers.

This debate is about our role as parents. Are we going to abdicate our responsibility and allow the world to educate our children with a secular world view, or are we going to actively seek to educate our children with a Christian world view? Are we going to demand respect, or are we going to send our kids to a system that does not care enough for the children to discipline them?

Will we choose public school because it's the cheaper route and because they have some better extra-curicular activities like basketball and band, or will we sacrifice the time and money as to do our best to make sure our children are trained up "in the way they should go?"

"Luther's New Testament was so much multiplied and spread by printers that even tailors and shoemakers, yea, even women and ignorant persons who had accepted this new Lutheran gospel, and could read a little German, studied it with the greatest avidity as the fountain of all truth. Some committed it to memory, and carried it about in their bosom. In a few months such people deemed themselves so learned that they were not ashamed to dispute about faith and the gospel not only with Catholic laymen, but even with priests and monks and doctors of divinity." - A complaint by German humanist Johann Cochlaeus.

I have to agree here, teacher's hands ARE tied, that's part of the problem (but just a small part).

I can only speak for myself as a homeschooling Christian parent... but there are numerous reasons our kids are not in public schools. The fact of the matter is, there ARE genuine, passionate, wonderful teachers, in the public school system - who despise the humanistic curriculum they are required to teach. How do I know this? I've talked to them, and this is what they say. Indeed their hands ARE tied, they have to teach what they are given to teach, period.
