Lynn, I agree that Paul in 1 Cor. is opposing those who were exalting water baptism to a place of importance that it did not occupy in Christ's gospel. Those persons were placing a great deal of emphasis on WHO had performed the baptism (of which 'party' they belonged to) & probably taught that re-baptism was necessary if it had been administered by the wrong party.
