    Isaiah and other Bible Questions

Okay so this pry can be answered pretty easy by you scholar people but I'm at a lost and very confused. I just got done reading thru Isaiah and I think to comprehend it more I need some terms defined. I dont get what it is talking about when it describes or says something about Jerusalem, Zion, Babylon, and Israel. I cant figure out if its talking about the cities then or what is to come? Seems Zion and Babylon represent something but I cant seem to grasp it. All I can think of is I know they were talked about in the move The Matrix! haha but that still doesn't help me..

Anyone care to explain all this? Also Isaiah I think is saying alot more than I can comprehend right now. So I'm just curious what other interesting things people have learned from that book. I did notice that it prophesied about the Messiah, and told in detail about what was to come with his death. And also there's many new testament books that qoute from Isaiah so that was cool to see, and understand the context in which they were qouted from.

    Thanks!

    Hi Mary,

I think a good place to start would be Gill's Commentary available on 5solas.org.

Psalm 16:5-6: The LORD is the portion of mine inheritance and my cup: thou maintainest my lot. The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places; yea, I have a goodly heritage.

Thanks.. not sure how happy the hunting is! haha it seems like a lot to read thru.. and find out where he mentions it all. I think if I looked at one place it was saying that Zion just means the people of God right? But why the word Zion? And if that is right is Babylon meaning not the people of God? Anyone know just right off the bat what these things represent? just a quick response? thanks...

Zion is the Land of Israel, Jeruselem. Becomes the heavenly Zion/spiritual as recorded in Hebrews.

For you have not come to a mountain that can be touched and to a blazing fire, and to darkness and gloom and whirlwind, and to the blast of a trumpet and the sound of words which sound was such that those who heard begged that no further word be spoken to them. [...] But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jeruselem and to myriads of angels, to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the Judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood, which speaks better than the blood of Abel" (Hebrews 12:18-24).

babylon represents everything opposite to God. . I am in no way a prophetic scripture interpreter. This is an easy way to think about it
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

Well, first off... Where are you in Isaiah?

Which passages are are you refering to?

These are the most important questions to be answered first. Understanding WHY Isaiah wrote some of the things he did helps our understanding. Earnest supplication towards God obviously plays an important role in understanding as well.

Keep reading, you're bound to find the answer somewhere else in another book. The more we read, the more clear it becomes. So, until your next post, here's a few passages to reconfirm what I think you might be noticing from the bible... (completely unrelated text though <sort of>)

[Pro 4:5-7] "... Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth. Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee: love her, and she shall keep thee. Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding."

[Pro 2:1-5] "... My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee; So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding; Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God."

[Job 28:12-13] "... But where shall wisdom be found? and where is the place of understanding? Man knoweth not the price thereof; neither is it found in the land of the living."

[Job 28:20] "... Whence then cometh wisdom? and where is the place of understanding?"

[Job 38:36] "... Who hath put wisdom in the inward parts? or who hath given understanding to the heart?"

[Pro 8:14-17] "... Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom: I am understanding; I have strength. By me kings reign, and princes decree justice. By me princes rule, and nobles, even all the judges of the earth. I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me."

[Job 28:28] "... And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding. "

[Job 33:14] "... For God speaketh once, yea twice, yet man perceiveth it not. "
"Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so..."
