The natural mans hatred of Gods sovereignty and mans inability!

    St John 6:66

66From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.

I hope this will spark some thought and discussion. In my studies I came across this verse. I find its linkage to this context :

    jn 6:

60Many therefore of his disciples, when they had heard this, said, This is an hard saying; who can hear it?

61When Jesus knew in himself that his disciples murmured at it, he said unto them, Doth this offend you?
62What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before?
63It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.
64But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray him.
65And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father. 66From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.

The crowd had been following Jesus for the food and in the mean time he preached the Gospel of Gods sovereign grace and mans inabilty which are both gospel truthes christ himself preached as we see here..

In vs 65 He states two truthes # 1 mans in ability [no man can come unto me] and Sovereign election [ except it were given him of my father]

Vs 66 says that from that time many of his disciples went back or drew back similar to apostasy.. and walked no more with him..

The thing about vs 66 in the original the word time is not there , its added by the translators, so here is the emphahsis if we take the word time from the verse..

    vs 65-66:
65And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father.

66From that many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.

It would appear that the emhasis is on the fact of the saying of Gods sovereignty and mans inability is so repulsive that the people stopped following after christ..

Some may say I already knew that but this is very unique to me that a verse emphasizing mans hatred of two High grace truthes such as Gods Sovereignty and Mans depravity would be in a passage or verse 666 , what you think..

ps brandon if this is something that needs to be in my blog then let me know and I will move it there though I thought it a good discussion topic..

Jesus is quite a standard I think, you have to react in some way to Him. He will not be ignored.

Makes me think what Paul said about being a sweet fragrance to some who are being saved and yet to others death.

The thought about why God chooses some and not others totally bewilders me, yet I know that it is righteous and holy and perfect.

I do not come from a Christian family and I had lived a very sinful life before Grace came to me.

When I first heard the Gospel, I just knew it was correct and was there for me to accept and enter into. Not immediately but within a month or so I bowed the knee.

I am now a Christian, I was not before, and all by the Grace of God.

I personally think somethings are unfathomable and people chase their tails and the wind searching for answers that are just beyond us.

Darryl, please try to write questions that provoke discussion when posting new threads. Thanks.
Ditch the Garbage! - Too many people are proud of their humility - I, on the other hand, am not humble - and am proud of it!

"Luther's New Testament was so much multiplied and spread by printers that even tailors and shoemakers, yea, even women and ignorant persons who had accepted this new Lutheran gospel, and could read a little German, studied it with the greatest avidity as the fountain of all truth. Some committed it to memory, and carried it about in their bosom. In a few months such people deemed themselves so learned that they were not ashamed to dispute about faith and the gospel not only with Catholic laymen, but even with priests and monks and doctors of divinity." - A complaint by German humanist Johann Cochlaeus.

Provoked me a bit I know, does not take much.

Actually the disciples who left Jesus because His teaching was too pie in the sky are quite interesting.

Who were these followers that they were religious to a point!

"Phillip, have I been with you this long and you still don't know me"?

Same is said of the Jews after a profound discourse in John, "He is raving mad, why listen' to Him"

They were just not cut out to be believers. At that time? Maybe later some did!

It's amazing this world and enmity with God.

    Praise God for His Grace.

Re: The natural mans hatred of Gods sovereignty and mans inability!

Yes, the natural man hates the things of God, as the following verse testifies.

1 Cor 2:14, (NASB), But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised.

One of the things I disliked was predestination. I was never taught it until sometime later, reading and researching on the internet. When I first saw it, it was totally foreign to my thinking.

It flies in the face of free-will-arminianism.

How relieved I was to find out that God really is totally in control of everything. Arminianism makes man the centre instead of God being the centre. This is why I reject all modern modifications to the five points of Calvinism.

How great it is when God melts a persons' heart, and creates in them a desire to repent of sins. It is truly glorious that our repentance originates with God and not with us.

Blessings to you as you bathe in His Sovereign Grace!

    Kevin
