What must I do to be saved?

    Acts 16:30-31

30And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? 31And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

As the majority of faithful members here would know, these above verses are often used by our fullerite buddies to create a condition for getting saved. They would say that we are not yet saved until we take a step of faith or make a confession of faith.

It is my contention that this is a little presumptious. There is no condition in the scripture above. I say that because other scriptures clearly tell us of God's sovereign choice. There is NO PARADOX in the bible.

What must I do to be saved?

If I am saved by the decree of God from eternity past, to ask such a question is evidence that God is working, so the answer would be, to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. However, we need to view this through the lens of Romans 9 and God's electing power. There is no free will here at all.

Good question. The problem is there is nothing you can do to get yourself saved.

Note the verse says to "be saved" not get saved. The second half of the verse is stating a fact not telling someone what they must do.

Re: What must I do to be saved?

All elect children are given like precious faith, so in this sense alone "our believing" has something to do with our salvation--it is evidence. I think the poll question is poorly worded.

What must I do to be saved? There is nothing I CAN DO to be saved.
Human compassion is deceptive and impotent. When we set that up as the standard of
judgment, even God will appear to lack sympathy. ......"Better is open rebuke than hidden love" -- Love is bold to speak the truth in open rebuke for the benefit of someone who needs the correction. Each time I speak this way to a person, I risk losing his respect and support, but I will do it because I love him. "There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear" (1 John 4:18), Vincent Cheung

Re: What must I do to be saved?

I also would say that the wording of the poll question could be answered both ways and still be correct depending on the focus or premise one starts with.

Do you believe that salvation has any thing to do with "our believing"?

If the premise is "merit" then NO!
If the premise is "result" then YES!

The question is vague and not framed properly.

The term "salvation" encompasses many different aspects of God's plan for His people.

Predestination, Justification, Election, Calling/Regeneration, Sanctification, Glorification.

All these terms are aspects of "salvation".

Is "believing" the cause, ground, basis or merit of these above aspects? NO!!

Is believing the response or consequence of these terms? YES!

So for the latter, YES! Salvation has something to do with "our believing"?

Re: What must I do to be saved?

Faith receives the salvation that God gives. The crucifixion of Christ is the grounds of our salvation. Faith is like an eyeball. It does not do anything, it only receives.
For whatever strength of arm he may have who swims in the open sea, yet in time he is carried away and sunk, mastered by the greatness of its waves. Need then there is that we be in the ship, that is, that we be carried in the wood, that we may be able to cross this sea. Now this Wood in which our weakness is carried is the Cross of the Lord, by which we are signed, and delivered from the dangerous tempests of this world.--St. Augustine

Re: What must I do to be saved?

The question is very misleading. It seems Salvation is a result of Christ's actions purely, nothing else. Belief is the resulting gift that the elect have been given to partake in his merciful salvation.
1 Timothy 3:16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached to the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.
